NORDIC TAN SPRAY TANNING
The active ingredient in spray tanning is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which is derived from sources such as plants. DHA is a cosmetic ingredient that gives the skin a tan without UV radiation. It works through a chemical reaction with the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum). When it reacts with the amino acids and proteins in the skin, the result is beautiful, bronzed skin.
The tanning solution is tinted, so the colour, known as the “guide colour”, shows as a beautiful tan on the skin straight away. The guide colour washes off, however. The actual tan starts to develop within 1–2 hours and is fully developed after 8 hours.
The depth of the tan can be adjusted by the number of layers applied. One layer gives a lighter result, and two layers give a darker tan.
The tan lasts about 5–7 days. For people who exercise a lot (sweating, frequent showers), the tan may start to fade after 3–4 days. Aftercare products that contain self-tanning ingredients help maintain your tan at home.
Spray tanning is suitable for everyone, including those with sensitive skin. Just like tanning in the sun, the result of a spray tan depends on your skin’s tanning ability, its pH and your skin type. So don’t compare your tan to anyone else’s: every tan is unique.
Before your spray tan
– Exfoliate your skin the evening before.
– Don’t use an oil-based scrub. Oils can prevent the tanning solution from absorbing into the skin.
– Moisturise your skin well the evening before, but don’t apply moisturiser within 4 hours of your appointment. Moisturisers can prevent the tanning solution from absorbing into the skin.
– Exfoliate between tanning sessions to keep your tan as even as possible.
– Do any hair removal the day before. Shave your legs, bikini line and underarms at least 6 hours before your appointment. Waxing or sugaring should be done at least 12 hours beforehand.
– For the best result, remove make-up, perfume and deodorant before your treatment using oil-free cleansers.
– Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing. The tanning solution washes out of most fabrics, but in some cases the cosmetic colour can stain clothes permanently. Avoid wool, nylon and silk for 8 hours after your treatment, as the tanning solution can react with these materials.
After your spray tan
– The colour starts to develop immediately and is fully developed after 8 hours.
– Avoid showering, swimming and sweating for 10 hours after your treatment.
– Avoid touching or rubbing your skin while the tan develops.
– After showering, pat your skin dry with a towel. Don’t rub or scrub. This keeps your tan beautifully even for longer.
– To extend your tan, we recommend using a self-tanning lotion or spray after your spray tan. Keeping your skin moisturised with a regular moisturiser also helps your tan last longer.
